December Blog
So for this monthly blog with today being New Year's Eve I have decided to go off on a tangent with the topic of waiting. Right now everyone is waiting for things to happen. In the hero unit we read Waiting for Godot and that was about just waiting for some dude, who by the way never even showed up...That really bothered me just because they literally were waiting their entire lives to meet him. The two friends should have gotten off their butts and went to Godot's home or something instead of just wasting their lives. But, to tie this back into life and what not I feel that New Year's Eve is very similar in terms of waiting for this big change that really has no impact other than the year number changing. People make goals and think they can be different, but at the end of the day you are who you are deep down and nothing as simple as the day changing can really alter the habits of someone. I think it is a nice idea of hitting the reset button for some, but honestly life goes on and the same things happen. I just feel that waiting is the most awful thing especially when it comes to something asinine like the time to change. This probably sounds like I am very impatient because I would rather go do something about my issues rather than wait for them to change on their own. But, that is my opinion that is what is very unique about this assignment is that I can pretty much say what I'm thinking as long as I can tie it into something we covered like Waiting for Godot. I hope you had a nice holiday, Mrs. Burnett!

November Monthly Blog: Cultural
For my monthly blog I am choosing to write about a holiday that relates to the cultural piece under discussion with the idea of different moral codes. I feel that as I am typing this I am reflecting on what brings different cultures together and what sets them apart. Obviously, after just finishing up the skeptical holiday of Thanksgiving. Everyone has different traditions and things they do every year that if they were changed would throw the culture of that said family into a depression spiral into despair. As someone who comes from a smaller family I feel that I do not get into the Thanksgiving holiday because it is not that big of a deal with my family as opposed to someone with a larger family that enjoys each other's company. I find myself enjoying the solidarity and laziness of my family's traditions when I hear of a huge ordeal of big family holiday traditions. I would not wish myself to have something that my family is not because we are who we are.
Ultimately, this relates to the cultural morality passage in the first page in which the dead fathers are brought up and how they should be dealt with based on the two different cultures. For me this is the big family holiday idea versus the little family holiday with the main topic being thanksgiving. When one family does one thing individuals from the other feel that they could never be a part of it just because they have been in one culture their whole life and being a part of an other culture would be preposterous. What this boils down to is the human tendency to avoid and denounce change. Why is this might you ask? Well, change is scary because it is unknown and the main point here is that fear of the unknown hold cultures together on their own. This is why their is divide in the world and until we decide to make a conscience effort to not be afraid we will be in the dark. It's just like being at the Thanksgiving dinner and refusing to try your great aunt's stuffing because "it looks funny". Who knows that unknown taste might just be the best stuffing ever made! I feel like this blog was all over the place but I really enjoyed writing this because of the holiday and the great food I am currently wishing their was leftovers of.

The Epic Hero
What is an epic hero? You might be wondering. To me an epic hero is a character who endures a great deal of adversity and comes out on top as the top dog. This character is usually a male based upon society's dominance of males being the dominant sex there really has been no female influence upped the epic hero population. I believe this is because throughout English classes the most recently written piece of literature was from the 1980s. Although there have been some very dominant females in society their numbers have been small. Therefore, one does not read about an epic female hero. Rather we here more about guys like Beowulf or Odysseus who kill, dominate, and find women. Not all heroes are like these two but as far as literature goes for me they are very popular.
The difference between an epic hero such as Beowulf and someone who is an actual hero like Tim Tebow is that Beowulf is a killer while Tebow was a great COLLEGE quarterback and it's a shame he could not cut it in the NFL because you hope for your heroes to succeed. Beowulf never failed, but real life heroes happen to fail many times before they succeed. I think this is what appeals to people. The fact that their heroes are human makes them relatable until they succeed and they become unbelievable. It seems interesting how once that hero reaches their peak how easily it is taken away from them. It is sad to see but at the same time that is life you never go out on top.
