January.
Within this month we have read A Doll's House. This was one of the pieces of literature in which the students taught the class about the background and reviewed an annotation from the text. This book is part of the women in literature units in which the main character is restricted in getting a loan for her dying husband, but she goes around the restrictions of society and forges a signature to enable her to save her husband. The force behind the restriction stems from an insane belief that all women cannot be trusted. To link this with the real world and the class I wonder why those who believe women cannot be trusted that would allow for women to be the most common gender in the teaching work force. I think it is very comical that those who are educating the future cannot be trusted. This really bothers me because I feel that someone proves they cannot be trusted through their actions not because of their gender. Also some of my favorite teachers have been females and they are trustworthy people. Therefore, whoever said that women cannot be trusted is an imbecile.
February.
The month of February has been a long one even though it is shorter than most months. The text I would like to reflect on for this blog is A Thousand Splendid Suns because this book really enlightened my thinking and attitude to places in the middle east. For most of my life I have always had this stereotypical view of the middle east as having this huge desert look to it with irrational people who hate America and everything it stands for me. Although this sounds very ignorant I believed it. After reading this book my eyes were opened to the majestic beauty within a very unfortunate situation between warring peoples. I feel for those who area affected by these situations because they had a beautiful country ruined by those who felt that they were the end all be all and anyone who opposed them should face their brute power. The part of the book where they talk about the Buddha statues and the view from them was marvelous but when they were destroyed was like killing a unicorn. It is so majestic that it just should never happen because it was really amazing. It makes sad that things that are amazing must be done away with by people who have views that are so distorted that they can not honor history. This leads me to question what else has been removed from the earth that had a strong impact on life?
March.
Wow March just really flew by and I do not really know what even happened this month. In all of the texts that we read inside and outside of class there were a lot of characters with good intentions that became corrupted due to their own ambition. For example, Faustus really was just trying to be successful and knowledgeable about all things in the world. I get that it bordered on him basically being God and that's frowned upon (I guess) but really though why shouldn't he strive to be the best? I get that he literally sold out and gave his soul away and accomplished nothing but that was because he just wasn't capable of being so awesome and powerful. I just want to know why good people are constantly deciding to do bad things? Is it due to the fact that ultimately we just do not give a care about what happens as long as we get what we feel we need at the time? I'm not going to say that it is wrong to go after something you want, but like where does the line become drawn? Is it universal or is there some limits that some have and others do not? I think since everyone has their own destiny that they control they therefore have the ability to control their own limits and wants and needs. Just like Faustus wants power I want success. I want to succeed in life and have a steady, well paying job and that to me is success. My question is whether or not I really am willing to sell out to get that or can I achieve my goal without choosing to do so and remain and inherently good person while still being successful?
